Want instant hot water straight from the tap?
One of the greatest benefits of tankless water heaters is their ability to supply hot water on demand. Traditional tank systems fill a metal drum with 30 or more gallons of water and then gradually heat it with natural gas or electricity (the same way as cooking on the stove). Although this system is reasonably efficient, heat is lost over time and must be maintained by burning more gas. If your home obtains hot water through an electrical water heater, it may be even more efficient to switch to a tankless water heater.
While tankless water heaters do require larger electrical currents to heat water quickly, less power is used overall than a tank that holds water idle for most of the day. With a tankless water heater, you can immediately enjoy hot water from any faucet in your home.
Is a tankless water heater right for you?
We want you to be as informed as possible before installing a tankless water heater on your property. Despite the cost savings and hot water on demand features, a tankless system is not ideal for all properties.
A smaller household may not have much need for a traditional tank system, as most of the water may end up sitting idle in the tank and will have to be reheated again for the next use. This does not seem as energy efficient as having a tankless water heater that gives you hot water instantly, with the system turning off when the hot water faucet is not in use.
How much energy can you save?
This figure depends on how much hot water your household consumes on a daily basis. If your home uses less than 41 gallons of hot water, a tankless water heater will be 24-34 percent more efficient than their traditional counterparts. Households that use plenty of hot water (86+ gallons daily) may only experience 8-14 percent in savings. This is why smaller households tend to benefit greater from tankless systems—you don’t have idle hot water stored up, only to require reheating.
